Eat Dirt! A Book About Leaky Gut

Eat Dirt!
Hippocrates is famous for saying “All disease begins in the gut”. According to Eat Dirt author Dr. Josh Axe, if you have any of these issues, then chances are you have leaky gut:

  1. Food allergies or food sensitivities
  2. Autoimmune disorders, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome or lupus
  3. Poor digestion, bloating, gas, constipation, loose stools, heartburn and nutrient malabsorption
  4. Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), including, IBS Crohn’s or colitis
  5. Thyroid issues such as hypothyroidism, Hashimotos thyroiditis or Graves disease
  6. Adrenal fatigue, candida and slow metabolism
  7. Mood disorders, including anxiety, depression and autism
  8. Chronic pain in joints and muscles, including arthritis and headaches
  9. Skin problems, including eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, acne and age spots

According to Dr. Axe, leaky gut affects 80-90% of people, and it really is the root cause of many diseases today.

A note about this post

I want to point out that what you're reading here is a combination if Dr. Axe's copywriter's words and my own. I'm adding context + my own analytical thoughts. As such, I went googling for a source to back up the 80-90% statement. After all, you can't believe everything you read on the internet, especially coming from the guy who's trying to sell you a book.

So far all I've found is Dr. Axe's claim and people repeating it, which is how misinformation spreads on the internet, and so I don't take it as irrefutable truth. I have asked his support team, and they've sent my question over to the affiliate team. I'll report back if I get an answer.

The Eat Dirt Plan

Dr. Josh Axe's brand new book, Eat Dirt, lays out a specific plan to heal your leaky gut. It includes meal plans, recipes, a quiz to help you identify your specific gut type, and much more.  If you think you have leaky gut, or if a doctor has confirmed it, check out this book. It may or may not make you feel better but it's likely a good resource to have.

Healing ailments via the gut isn't new, but it's getting a lot of attention these days in various contexts because so many ailments are related to the gut. Most of the immune system is in the gut. The immune system keeps you well but needs to be functioning optimally. There's a lot of research recently about inflammation too, and that can be a gut issue. Your body is one big system with different parts working together, and against each other.

I'm guessing that the book title comes from the fact that dirt is full of microorganisms that help the immune system.

Reader reviews

Here's a review the I found on Amazon (based on a free review copy):

The science nut in me loves how Dr. Axe breaks down the latest research in an easy-to-understand way to show how over-sterilizing our food and environment is leading to a major health crisis. About 50 million Americans alone suffer from auto-immune diseases, and many of them are the result of an unbalanced microbiome. This book doesn't just talk about science, though, but provides a questionnaire to help people figure out if they may be unnecessarily suffering from symptoms related to 5 different unhealthy gut types. Then, he gives a detailed outline of how you can rebuild your gut health using dietary changes, proven supplements, essential oils, and other lifestyle changes. If you or someone you love is dealing with allergies, auto-immune disease, or just not feeling well, this book is a must-read.

There's a longer, really well done (I think) review that uses phrases such as,

At first, I thought this book was only mildly interesting. Then, I decided to take the “Leaky Gut” test…. at this point, I got a LOT more interested in what Dr. Axe had to say.

The author cites quite a bit of scientific studies, but he admits that the field is changing, and that tons of research is ongoing. In fact, he notes that there have been over a thousand new research studies in the last year alone.

These reviews tip me towards buying the book.
