Fat's gotten a bad reputation in the past. In the early 90s, Susan Powter wrote the book Stop the Insanity and with her charisma, she got her own talk show. I remember her shouting, “Fat makes you fat!” It's now more than two decades later. People still believe that fat makes you fat. Low-fat dieting is still a thing. “Low fat!!” is still a marketing ploy and fat is often replaced with unhealthy ingredients. Meanwhile, many studies and experts have disputed that fat is “bad for you”, instead claiming that your body needs fat. Your body needs the right fat. Your body relies on fat. Your body needs smart fat.
The brain is made mostly of fat, so does it not make sense that you need fat to at least keep that functional? Studies and my own experiences show that fat can help prevent depression and relieve attention deficit disorder (ADD). The outside layer of your cells are made of fat. Fat balances hormones. Your body needs fat, but not every and any fat.
Your body needs smart fat
Fat does not make you fat. One of the most pervasive – and destructive – lies about food, weight, diet, etc., is that it does. People still believe that crap. The truth is, fats – Smart Fats – are vital to your health and help you to lose excess body fat. Fat is not an “f” word.
This post is an example of an instance in which I'm given a ton of pre-written affiliate messaging but only use some of it – mostly the key points – because I know the message. I've been preaching that message for years. I generally prefer to use my own voice anyway because so many promotions have pre-written copy that include phrases such as “my good friend” and “my esteemed colleague” that make me cringe at the implied familiarity. When I receive emails from people with that copy it sounds so disingenuous and I think, “Good friend? Do you even know the person?” When I feel motivated to, and where possible, I prefer to cut through the hyperbole and tell it as I experience it.
(Also, I tend to get emails from multiple affiliates that use the exact same message, exactly as written in the suggested copy. I want to stand out.)
2. The Smart Fat authors are legit. Check out these bios:
Steven Masley is a highly respected physician, nutritionist, author, speaker and patient educator (“and a professional CHEF!” they want you to know) who has devoted much of his career to the study of heart disease and aging, publishing research on these topics in major medical journals. He has one of the highest-ranking PBS specials in history, “30 Days to A Younger Heart”. Dr. Masley has spoken for over 300 physician continuing medical education events, and for over 700 public presentations on a variety of topics related to health, aging, and cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Jonny Bowden is a nationally known expert on weight loss, nutrition and health. He is a board-certified nutritionist with a master’s degree in psychology and the author of 14 books on health, healing, food and longevity including three best-sellers, “The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth”, “Living Low Carb” and “The Great cholesterol Myth”.
[An aside: Seeing the name “Dr. Jonny” makes me think of “Dr. Jonny Fever” from WKRP in Cincinnati.]
3. Smart Fat might change your life forever. They say it will change your life forever, and it's all over the recommended copy, but I don't want to make any guarantees. See, it will only change your life if you take action and let it. Buying it and leaving it in a pile without reading it, won't change your life. Reading it but ignoring everything in it, won't change your life. Everyone has a book (or books) that changed the way they think about something. Smart Fat could be yours.
4. Smart Fat (the book) is divided into 3 sections:
Part 1: Smart Facts About Smart Fat. (Cute, catchy.)
Part 2: Smart-Fat Your Food.
Part 3: Beyond Diet: Smart For Life
Meals in a glass (They've created “Smart Fat Shake” recipes)
I've seen the manuscript. The book is really good. It explains good fats, bad fats, and neutral fats. It explains how fats affect your body and how they react with different nutrients and foods. It talks about food as medicine, which is one of my messages. I often hear in my head, “Food can heal you or harm you.” (Sometimes I hear it in Meghan's voice.)
What's cool about the 30-day eating plan is that you can choose your food from protein types, fat types and fiber types, so it's less prescriptive and works with what's available (in-store and seasonally) and with your tastes.
Funny aside: The other day my boyfriend – the chef with a lot of nutrition knowledge – “diagnosed” me as zinc deficient and advised me to eat some of the canned oysters that he buys. I told him that I don't like them and he responded, “It doesn't matter if you don't like it; it's good for you.” (“Thanks, mom” was my retort.) Then on my latest pass of Smart Fat I noticed that Smart Fat has a recipe for Cucumber with Smoked Oysters and Avocado and Steven and Jonny preface it by saying that oysters “are smart to eat as they are loaded with zinc, protein, arginine, and omega-3 fats.”
This phrase comes to mind regarding my own nutritional deficiencies: “Physician, heal thyself.” (Also, “The shoemakers children don't have shoes”, but that's something else.)
5.Smart Fat comes out on January 19 but you can pre-order now from Amazon or your favourite online bookseller.
